One should forgive, but never forget the horrors of recent history, if we want this never to happen again... This is one of the many places where the Romanian intellectual elite, important politicians, together with faithful Christians - priests, countrymen, was smashed in torture and unconceivable humiliation. The prison has been renovated, but the conditions back then had nothing to do with human rights. It is such a contrast between the beautiful landscape outside and the pain within these walls, that cannot speak everything these people have gone through. A few personal objects of the prisoners remind us about how life should have been for them before the communist terror. Saints - most of them without a name, without a celebration day in the calendar, men and women who had the strength not to give up their faith, ideal and human dignity... The visitor of Sighet Prison from Maramures cannot help but feel unworthy of such ancestors.
