The Roman-Catholic Dome from "Unirii" Square |
Nicknamed not without reason The Little Vienna, this city is still recovering after decades of neglect towards its architectural treasures - this is the Romanian city with the most Art Nouveau and Secession style buildings. The elegance and grandeur of the palaces downtown have seen their Golden Age before World War II. Hopefully, the city is starting to recover thanks to some important European projects of restoration, given the fact that it will be declared European Cultural Capital in 2021.
We visited Timisoara in January, while the Christmas atmosphere still lingered - the Christmas lights and the skating rink from Liberty Square were still there, along with all the Baroque palaces lit wonderfully by night time. In fact, all the squares - "Unirii", "Liberty", and "Opera" were somehow cast in gold. The ruins and the building sites were hidden in the dark, and you, as a visitor, felt the egotistical desire to look only at the fairy-tale side of the city.
